A Look Back at AHS Sports
Adena High School sports has received recognition through out it's history. At the class of 1947's resunion, this article was reported as athletic activity and this class was recognized as contributing the school and the community.

The success of the basketball team was a special event for the school. Sixty years passing does not diminish memories or pride of the Golden Wave.

The football program had a good record. Led by Mitchell (Moot) Black the team won five games. Of the four losses, three were by seven points and with a little luck it could have been an eight game win season. On the bright side was the 20 nothing shut out of Cadiz. Again Dillonvale was a road block, however revenge came on the basketball court. Football letter winners were as follows: Mitchell Black, Kenneth Case, John Doloresco, Stanley Dulkoski, Jim Eliopulos, Steve Eliopulos, Paul Ferda, Howard Hixon, Bob Keeton, Mitchell Kowalski, Herman Maroni, Lawrence Meddles, Lloyd Meddles, George Gullo, Pete Milicia, Everett Moore, Joe Rebeck, and Ed Stankiewicz. Jerry Melchiori was the coach.

How about a 21 win and 5 lost season for the basketball team? Four of those losses were to Yorkville and it's star player Allessi. Adena ha a 101 score against Cadiz. In county tournament play, Adena beat Wayne, Smithfield, and Amsterdam. Then in sectional tournament the next victims were Belmont and Somerton. The team's last game was a 6 point loss in the District tournament to Walnut Creek. It was quite a winning season. Ed Stankiewicz got honorable mention on International News Service and Moot Black was awarded 2nd team All State Guard. Letter winners Ed Stankiewicz, John Doloresco, Howard Hixon, Everett Moore and Moot Black. The coach for this successful team was Jerry Melchiori.

The 1947 baseball team won only one game while losing nine games. Letter winners were Bob Denham, Mike Yanok, Moot Black, EdStankiewicz, Ed Dulkoski, Everett Moore, Mitchell Kowalski, Herman Maroni, Ed Zitko, Jim Eliopulos, Tom Somerville, and John Dzingleski. Paul Ferda, George Gullo and Lloyd Meddles participated in the Track Meet held at the Smithfield Fairgrounds. Jerry Melchiori was the coach for the Baseball Team.

The 1955 class of Adena High School had a very successful sports program.

All E.O.A.L. team included Jack Penman, Jack Peltz, Mitch Toto, Brian Aspinall, Terry Stanwick, John Stock and Jim Jarvis. All Eastern Ohio were accorded to Jim Jarvis and Mitch Toto. All Valley included Mitch Toto, Jim Jarvis and Brian Aspinall.

The record for the basketball team was 8 of 15 games. They were runner up in the county tournament and had a close loss to Yorkville in the sectional. Letters and service bars were presented to Jack Penman, Andy Yanok, Myron Dulkoski, Joe Work, Jerry Carter, Eugene Wease and Mike Madzia. All E.O.A.L. teams included Terry Stanwick and Myron Dulkoski. Terry Stanwick was all eastern Ohio. The coach was Ed Joseph and Steve Kocheran was his assistant.

The baseball team won 9 and lost 2. They were co-county champs and sectional champs. Then they lost to Philo by a score of 6 to 7.There was outstanding piching with Myron "Muzz" Dulkoski having three no hit games and Andy Yanok one. Ed Joseph was coach along with assistant Steve Kocheram. Baseball letters and service bars were presented to Jack Penman, Jerry Thazton, Randy Bednarski, Eugene Wease, Andy Yanok, Brian Aspinall, John Stock, Myron Dulkoski, Mike Madzia, John Pruneski, Eugene Yakubowski, and Tom Yakubowski.

Adena's "Monk" Moscrip went to Stanford after a year at Kiski Prep School in Saltsburg, PA. He became one of the famed "vow boys" who 50 years later are still revered by the fans at Palo Alto. The Vow Boys were the first team to go to the Rose Bowl for three straight years. Moscrip was a two-way player as a pass receiver because of his speed and strength but was more renowned on defense. Moscrip was 6 ft tall weighing 188 lbs as a sophomore at Stanford when they snapped a 27 game winning streak owned by Howard Jones' USC Trojans. The All-American end in both 1934 and '35 and a three time All-Pacific Coast choice, Moscrip went on to play professional football with the Detriot Lions and was their leading pass receiver in 1939 before a knee injury forced him to retire from the grid-iron. Moscrip was inducted into the Upper Ohio Valley Dapper Dan Club's Hall of Fame on February 10, 1985. Moscrip died at his home in Atherton, California in October of 1980 of a heart attack. James H. "Monk" Moscrip was regarded as the greatest athlete in the history of Adena High School.

The Athletic program at Adena High School in the 1929-30 years were headlined by James "Monk" Moscrip. He was a multiple player in the sports program that propelled him to the status of All American. Many of his fellow players have been long time residents of this coal mining town. Go Golden Wave!

Fellow players in the 1930 season that won letters or service bars were: Guido D'Anniballe (QB), William Aspinall, Don Brokaw, Bill Dalrymple, Alex Fillipovich, John Fomenko, John Hall, Howard Hull, Halford Heath, Mike Hostinski, Steve Kalonick, Bill Kubnski, Steve Luber, John Moreland, John Orban, Fred Packer, Joe Robb, Rollie Wishard, Kenneth Wright, and Lewis Sipos. The coach was F. M. Thomas. The team won nine games, tied two, and lost only to Dillonvale 0-6. Taking all league first team was James Moscrip, John Moreland, and Fred Packer! The league's second team included John Hall, Howard Hull, Steve Kalonik, and Steve Luber.

Fellow players in the 1929 season that won letters or service bars were, William Aspinall, Henry Bednarski, Halford Brokaw, Raymond Crawford, John Hall, Frank Hargrave, Halford Heath, Steve Kalonick, Steve Luber, John Moreland, Russell Pennman, Fred Packer, Lewis Sipos, Ralph Somerville, and Trusko Lagki. They won seven of nine games. Receiving all league honors were James Moscrip, Steve Luber, John Moreland, and Fred Packer. The coach was F. M. Thomas.
