In view of the great history of our town, Adena was once a land founded on fertile ground beginning with
agriculture. Originated in 1801 railroads and coal mines were the results of many jobs. Adena's coal mines
were part of eastern Ohio's
richest coal area.
Incorporated in 1908, Schools, homes, and businesses were broadly becoming established and businesses prospered.
As Adena flourished, parades and festivals were
captivating! In 1939, the population reached 1500 as bus companies made connections to Martins Ferry,
Steubenville, Cadiz, and Wheeling, alluring business from bigger cities. Historically, Adena has an intriguing
history within itself and exists today 600 feet above sea level. According to the 2000 United States Census, Adena's population is 815 with approximately 352 families. Located two miles north of U.S. Route 250, 14 miles
east of St. Clairsville, 30 miles south of Steubenville, and 19 miles northwest of Wheeling, West Virginia, Adena, Ohio is an enchanting place to reside.
Today, Adena is governed by a village council and Mayor Ray Jeskey who was elected in the year 2000 and is serving his third term.
The community has a restaurant Toto's Snack Shack, a post office, two
schools , (Adena Headstart and BuckeyeWest Elementary), the Adena Fire Co., the Adena Police Department,
Bernosky's Pizza Shop, Peoples National Bank, Figgy's Fuel Mart, Hair Headquarters-barber and and beauty shop, Kidds
Hardware store, P & M Restaurant, Jefferson Landmark,Terry's Bar, Borkoski's Funeral home, the Adena Branch Library,
Jay Hopkins Trucking, Zeroski's Excavating, Adena Ammo & Arms,
and various other small businesses.
Active organizations in Adena are: the Adena Heritage Committee ,
Adena Baseball League and Girls Softball,
the AARP, the Adena Lions Club, the Adena Women's
Club, the American Legion, Legion Auxiliary, and Sons of the Legion.
Adena houses three Holy denominations. The Covenant Presbyterian Church of Harrisville,
St. Casimirs Catholic Church, and the Adena United Methodist Church.
Grants are currently being sought and used to improve and
beautify the village that was once coal fertile. Fortunately, this small town is a great place to live and it's friendly neighboring
traits are charming to visitors and newcomers. Over the centuries Adena is renowned for integrity, hard work, and great pride in the community.
